How to use contar in the conditional

The conditional of contar is regular: contaría, contarías, contaría, contaríamos, contarían. Use it for hypotheticals ("Si supiera, te lo contaría") and polite questions: "¿Contaríamos con su apoyo?" In proposals and negotiations, it is a soft way to ask for commitment. It also reports earlier promises: "Dijo que me lo contaría."

Examples

  • Si supiera algo, te lo contaría.

If I knew anything, I'd tell you.

  • ¿Contaríamos con su apoyo para el proyecto?

Could we count on your support for the project?

  • Dijo que nos contaría los detalles después.

She said she'd tell us the details later.
