How to use cumplir in the imperfect
The imperfect is regular: cumplía, cumplías, cumplía, cumplíamos, cumplían. Use it for reliability or compliance over time (siempre cumplía) and for ongoing situations: La fábrica no cumplía las normas. For a single birthday, use the preterite instead: Cuando cumplí 18, me fui de casa. The imperfect is also good for describing working conditions in the past, such as the shifts people used to work.
