How to use esperar in the conditional

The conditional of esperar is regular: esperaría, esperarías, esperaría, esperaríamos, esperarían. Use it for advice ("Yo esperaría un poco más") and hypotheticals. "¿Qué esperarías de un jefe?" asks about expectations. In negotiations, "esperaríamos una respuesta antes del viernes" is a polite way to set a deadline. Like the future, it uses the full infinitive as its stem, with no irregular forms.

Examples

  • Yo esperaría a que bajen los precios.

I'd wait for prices to come down.

  • Esperaríamos una respuesta antes del viernes.

We would expect an answer before Friday.

  • ¿Qué esperarías de un buen líder?

What would you expect from a good leader?
