How to use estar in the present subjunctive

The present subjunctive of estar carries accents on most forms: esté, estés, esté, estemos, estén. It appears after "cuando" for future time, after wishes and requests, and in phrases like "Espero que estés bien," a common opening for emails and messages. Do not confuse esté (subjunctive) with este (this). You will also hear it in "no creo que esté" when you doubt where someone is or how something is going.

Examples

    I hope you are well.

  • Necesito que todos estén en la sala a las nueve.

  • Cuando esté listo el contrato, te lo mando.
