How to use estudiar in the preterite
The preterite is regular: estudié, estudiaste, estudió, estudiamos, estudiaron. It is the tense for completed degrees and courses (Estudié ingeniería) and for things you analyzed at a specific time. When you talk about your education in an interview, you will use the preterite almost every time, usually with a place or a date: Estudié en la UNAM de 2010 a 2015. If you want to say what you were studying when something else happened, use the imperfect instead.

Estudiamos el problema y encontramos la causa.
We studied the problem and found the cause.
