How to use estudiar in the imperfect
The imperfect is regular: estudiaba, estudiabas, estudiaba, estudiábamos, estudiaban. Use it for background (Cuando estudiaba...) and habits in the past. It pairs naturally with the preterite: Estudiaba cuando me llamaste. It is also the tense for describing what life was like during your student years: where you studied, how many hours you put in, who you studied with. Notice the accent on estudiábamos, which every -ar verb has in the nosotros imperfect form.
