How to use permitir in the preterite

The preterite is regular: permití, permitiste, permitió, permitimos, permitieron. Use it for specific permissions (me permitieron entrar), for results that something made possible (el préstamo nos permitió crecer), and for things someone allowed to happen. Note the accents on permití and permitió, and remember that permitimos looks the same in the present and the preterite. In news reports, it often explains what a decision made possible.

  • El préstamo nos permitió abrir una segunda sucursal.

The loan allowed us to open a second branch.

  • ¿Te permitieron cambiar la fecha del vuelo?

Did they let you change the date of your flight?
