How to use permitir in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: permitía, permitías, permitíamos, permitían. It describes past rules and conditions (antes la ley no permitía...) and what someone used to allow: mi mamá no me permitía ver televisión entre semana. It is the natural tense when comparing old policies with new ones at work or in society, or describing what a salary or situation used to make possible.

Examples

  • Antes la empresa no permitía trabajar desde casa.

The company didn't use to allow working from home.

  • Mi mamá no nos permitía ver televisión entre semana.

My mom didn't let us watch TV on weeknights.

  • El sueldo apenas me permitía pagar la renta.

My salary barely covered the rent.
