How to use vivir in the preterite
The preterite of vivir is regular: viví, viviste, vivió, vivimos, vivieron. Use it for a period of residence with clear limits: "Viví dos años en Toronto." It also describes experiences: "Vivimos una situación complicada." Remember that vivimos is the same in present and preterite, so a time phrase is often needed to show the past.
