How volver conjugates

Volver has an o→ue stem change in the stressed forms of the present (vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, vuelven) and present subjunctive (vuelva), but not in nosotros (volvemos, volvamos). The preterite, imperfect, future and conditional are regular: volví, volvía, volveré, volvería. The participle is irregular: vuelto. Devolver (to return something) and resolver follow the same pattern.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "volvido" for the participle: the correct form is vuelto.
  • Confusing volver (to come back) with devolver (to give back): "Devolví el libro," not "Volví el libro."
  • Using "otra vez" when "volver a" is more natural: "Volví a revisar" (I checked again).
