How to use volver in the preterite
The preterite of volver is regular, without a stem change: volví, volviste, volvió, volvimos, volvieron. Use it for completed returns ("Volví ayer") and for something that happened again: "Volvió a llover." "Se volvió" describes a change of character: "Se volvió muy desconfiado." Remember that volvimos is the same in present and preterite.

Volvimos a casa muy tarde.
We got home very late.
Volvió a llamar el cliente de ayer.
Yesterday's client called again.
Desde que lo ascendieron, se volvió muy serio.
Since he was promoted, he has become very serious.
