How preguntar conjugates

Preguntar follows the regular -ar model in every tense: pregunto, preguntas, pregunta in the present, pregunté and preguntó in the preterite, preguntaba in the imperfect. There are no stem or spelling changes, so the only forms that need attention are the accented ones: preguntó, preguntáis and the first person preterite pregunté. Learn it alongside the phrase preguntar por (to ask about someone) and the reflexive preguntarse (to wonder).

  Siempre pregunto el precio antes de pedir.

  I always ask the price before ordering.

• Preterite

  El cliente preguntó si podíamos adelantar la entrega.

  The client asked if we could move up the delivery.

• Imperfect

  De niño, preguntaba por qué a todo.

  As a kid, I asked why about everything.

• Future

  Preguntaré en recepción si hay habitaciones libres.

  I'll ask at the front desk if there are any rooms available.

• Present perfect

  ¿Has preguntado a contabilidad cuándo pagan las facturas?

  Have you asked accounting when they pay the invoices?

• Present subjunctive

  Prefiero que le preguntes tú al proveedor; a mí no me contesta.

  I'd rather you ask the supplier; he doesn't answer me.

• Conditional

  Yo le preguntaría directamente al jefe qué prefiere.

  I'd ask the boss directly what he prefers.

• Affirmative commands

  Pregunte en la ventanilla tres si necesita un certificado.

  Ask at window three if you need a certificate.

Mistakes to avoid

• Using preguntar for requests. Ask for help, a raise or a coffee is pedir: Le pedí ayuda, not *Le pregunté ayuda*.
• Saying *preguntar una pregunta*. The natural phrase is hacer una pregunta: ¿Puedo hacerte una pregunta?
• Forgetting the indirect object pronoun: Le pregunté a María, with both le and a María.
