How to use preguntar in the imperfect
The imperfect is regular: preguntaba, preguntabas, preguntaba, preguntábamos, preguntaban. Use it for repeated questions in the past or for background. It is also the natural tense for describing what people kept asking, for instance a child on a long car trip or customers who repeatedly asked about the same product. In reported speech it describes a question that was in progress: Me preguntaba si ya tenía noticias, She was asking me whether I had any news yet.

Cada semana le preguntaba a mi jefe por el aumento.
Every week I asked my boss about the raise.
Mi hijo siempre preguntaba cuándo íbamos a llegar.
My son was always asking when we were going to arrive.
Los clientes preguntaban mucho por la versión en inglés.
Clients used to ask a lot about the English version.
