Comenzar conjugation Spanish verb

Comenzar means to begin or start, and it is a slightly more formal alternative to empezar, common in writing, announcements and speeches. Like empezar, it takes a before an infinitive: comenzó a llover. It can have an object (comenzamos la reunión) or none (la reunión comienza a las diez).

  • to begin; to start
  • stem-changing (e→ie)
  • Participle: comenzado
  • Gerund: comenzando

Comenzar in the present: comienzo, comienzas, comienza, comenzamos, comenzáis, comienzan.

How comenzar conjugates

Comenzar combines an e→ie stem change with the z→c spelling change. The stressed e becomes ie in comienzo, comienzas, comienza, comienzan and in the present subjunctive (comience). The z becomes c before e: comencé in the preterite and every form of the subjunctive (comience, comencemos). Other tenses are regular: comenzaba, comenzaré, comenzado. Empezar works exactly the same way.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving out a before the infinitive: Comenzó a llover, not Comenzó llover.
  • Keeping the z before e: it is comencé and comience, not comenzé or comienze.
  • Putting ie in the nosotros form: comenzamos, not comienzamos.
