How to use comenzar in the present

In the present, comenzar changes e to ie in four forms: comienzo, comienzas, comienza, comienzan, while comenzamos keeps the e. It is common in schedules and announcements (el vuelo comienza a abordar a las seis) and for near-future plans. Use comenzar a + infinitive to say something is starting to happen. In casual speech empieza is more frequent, but comienza sounds a bit more polished.

Examples

  • El vuelo comienza a abordar en quince minutos.

The flight starts boarding in fifteen minutes.

  • Comienzo el nuevo trabajo el lunes.

I start the new job on Monday.

  • Los niños comienzan las clases en agosto.

The kids start school in August.
