How to use comenzar in the preterite

In the preterite, the yo form changes z to c before e: comencé. The rest are regular, with no ie: comenzaste, comenzó, comenzamos, comenzaron. Use it for the start of events and periods: la reunión comenzó tarde, comencé a estudiar español hace un año. Writing comenzé is a very common spelling mistake, even among native speakers in informal messages. Nosotros comenzamos is the same in the present and preterite.

The meeting started twenty minutes late.

  • Comencé a estudiar español hace un año.
