How to use comprender in the preterite
The preterite is regular: comprendí, comprendiste, comprendió, comprendimos, comprendieron. Use it for a moment of realization or understanding: por fin comprendí el problema. It often appears with por fin, entonces or en ese momento. Remember the written accents on comprendí and comprendió, and that comprendimos is the same in the present. There is no stem change in the preterite either.

En ese momento comprendí que tenía que cambiar de trabajo.
At that moment I realized I had to change jobs.
¿Comprendieron bien las instrucciones?
Did you all understand the instructions?
Cuando vio las cifras, comprendió la gravedad de la situación.
When he saw the figures, he understood how serious the situation was.
