How to use comprender in the imperfect
The imperfect is regular: comprendía, comprendías, comprendíamos, comprendían. It describes ongoing understanding, or the lack of it, in the past: al principio no comprendía las reglas. It is also used for what a plan or package used to include. Use the preterite for the moment something finally made sense. Every form carries an accent on the í, and the nosotros form comprendíamos is common in stories about a group that slowly came to understand something.

Mi maestra comprendía muy bien a los alumnos con dificultades.
My teacher really understood students who were struggling.
Antes el seguro comprendía también la atención dental.
