How to use costar in the conditional

The conditional is regular: costaría, costarían. ¿Cuánto costaría...? is the polite way to ask for a quote or estimate. It is also used to talk about how hard something would be: Me costaría mucho mudarme. In negotiations, it softens price talk compared with the present. Remember the stem keeps its o here, because the stress falls on the ending.

Examples

  • ¿Cuánto costaría añadir una habitación más?

How much would it cost to add one more room?

  • Me costaría mucho dejar este trabajo.

It would be really hard for me to leave this job.

  • Hacerlo en dos semanas costaría el doble.

Doing it in two weeks would cost twice as much.
