How to use formar in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: formaba, formabas, formábamos, formaban. It describes past roles and ongoing situations: formaba parte del coro, las casas formaban un círculo. It is also common for describing what something used to consist of before a reorganization. Use the preterite for the moment a group was formed and the imperfect for what it was like.

As a girl I was in the church choir.

  • Las casas formaban un círculo alrededor de la plaza.
