How to use gustar in the preterite

The preterite gives your reaction to a specific experience: ¿Te gustó la película? Me gustaron mucho los postres. Use gustó for one thing or an activity and gustaron for plural things. It is the natural tense for feedback after an event, a meal, a trip or a meeting. With the imperfect, by contrast, you describe what you used to like in general, so compare Me gustó el viaje with De niño me gustaba viajar.

Examples

  • Al cliente le gustó mucho la maqueta.

The client really liked the mock-up.

  • ¿Qué te gustó más del viaje?

What did you like most about the trip?

  • No me gustaron los comentarios de la reunión.

I didn't like the comments at the meeting.
