How to use gustar in the imperfect

The imperfect describes likes and dislikes over a period in the past: De joven me gustaba bailar. Use gustaba with one thing or an activity and gustaban with plural things. It is ideal for talking about childhood, a previous job or how things used to be, and it contrasts with the preterite, which gives your reaction to a single event. In polite speech, ¿Le gustaba algo más? sometimes appears instead of the present in shops.

Examples

  • En mi antiguo trabajo me gustaba el ambiente, pero no el horario.

At my old job I liked the atmosphere, but not the hours.

  • A mis padres les gustaban las películas del oeste.

    My parents liked westerns.

  • ¿Qué te gustaba hacer de niño?

What did you like to do as a kid?
