How to use jugar in the preterite
The preterite has no stem change, only a spelling change in the yo form: jugué, jugaste, jugó, jugamos, jugaron. Use it for a specific game or match and its result: Jugamos contra Chile y perdimos. It also appears with jugársela for a risk someone took at a specific moment: Se la jugó y le salió bien, He took the gamble and it worked out.

On Saturday we played against the accounting team and won.
Se la jugó con esa inversión y le salió bien.
She took a big risk with that investment and it paid off.
