How leer conjugates

Leer is a regular -er verb with a spelling change: when an unstressed i would fall between two vowels, it becomes y. That gives leyó and leyeron in the preterite, leyera in the imperfect subjunctive and leyendo as the gerund. The other preterite forms and the participle carry an accent on the í: leí, leíste, leímos, leído. Creer, caer and oír show the same y.

Did you read the director's email?

  • Preterite

El abogado leyó el contrato dos veces antes de firmar.

The lawyer read the contract twice before signing.

  • Imperfect

As a girl I read until really late with a flashlight.

  • Present perfect

¿Has leído el informe que te mandé?

Have you read the report I sent you?

  • Future

Leeré tu propuesta este fin de semana y te doy mis comentarios el lunes.

I'll read your proposal this weekend and give you my feedback on Monday.

It's important to read the instructions before using the equipment.

leer entre líneas
to read between the lines
leer la mente
to read someone's mind

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing the third-person preterite with i: it is leyó and leyeron, not leió or leieron.
  • Dropping accents: leí, leíste, leímos and leído all need a written accent on the í.
