How to use leer in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: leía, leías, leíamos, leían, each with an accent on the í. It describes reading habits in the past (de niño leía cómics) and reading in progress when something happened: leía en el sillón cuando se fue la luz. To say what a sign or note said, Spanish uses decir, not leer: el letrero decía 'cerrado'.

Examples

  • Mi abuelo leía el periódico todas las mañanas.

My grandfather read the paper every morning.

  • Leía en el sillón cuando se fue la luz.
