How to use mirar in the imperfect

The imperfect of mirar is regular: miraba, mirabas, miraba, mirábamos, miraban. Use it for background actions ("Miraba por la ventana cuando empezó a nevar") and habits. It is common in descriptions: "Todos nos miraban." The only extra accent is on mirábamos. It also describes how someone looked at others over time: "Siempre me miraba con desconfianza." Use the preterite instead when the look is a single, sudden event.

Examples

  • Miraba por la ventana cuando empezó a nevar.

I was looking out the window when it started to snow.

  • El jefe nos miraba con cara de preocupación.
