How to use necesitar in the imperfect
The imperfect is regular: necesitaba, necesitabas, necesitábamos, necesitaban. It describes ongoing needs in the past (necesitaba un cambio) and is very common as a softer, more polite present: necesitaba hacerle una consulta means 'I wanted to ask you something'. You will hear this polite imperfect constantly in shops, offices and phone calls. The nosotros form necesitábamos carries a written accent.
