How to use salir in the imperfect

The imperfect of salir is regular: salía, salías, salía, salíamos, salían. Use it for past routines ("Salía a correr cada mañana") and for background: "Justo salía cuando llegaste." "Salía con..." describes a past relationship over time. It contrasts with salió, which reports a single departure or result. Every form carries a written accent on the í, which marks the stressed syllable.

Examples

  • Justo salía cuando sonó el teléfono.

I was just leaving when the phone rang.

  • De joven salía todos los fines de semana.

When I was young, I went out every weekend.

  • Antes salíamos a almorzar juntos los viernes.

We used to go out for lunch together on Fridays.
