How seguir conjugates

Seguir has an e→i stem change in the present (sigo, sigues, sigue, siguen), in the third person preterite (siguió, siguieron) and throughout the present subjunctive (siga, sigamos). It also has a spelling change: gu becomes g before o and a (sigo, siga) to keep the hard g sound. The gerund is siguiendo. Conseguir follows the same pattern.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using an infinitive after seguir: "Sigo trabajando," not "Sigo trabajar."
  • Writing "sego" or "sigua": the forms are sigo and siga.
  • Using "todavía" with estar when seguir is more natural: "Sigue lloviendo" is very common for "It's still raining."
