How to use suceder in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: sucedía, sucedían. Use it for background events in a story or for things that used to happen repeatedly: Eso sucedía mucho antes. It often appears with mientras: Mientras sucedía esto... The imperfect focuses on the event in progress rather than on its completion. Like pasar, it often sets the scene for a main event told in the preterite, as in a story or an incident report.
