How mantener conjugates

Mantener conjugates exactly like tener, so if you know tener you know mantener. The yo present is mantengo, the stressed e becomes ie (mantienes, mantiene, mantienen), the preterite uses the stem mantuv- (mantuve, mantuvo), and the future and conditional use mantendr- (mantendré, mantendría). The tú command is mantén, with a written accent that tener's ten does not need.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Making it regular: say mantengo, mantuvo, mantendré, not mantieno, mantenió or manteneré.
  • Writing the tú command without an accent: mantén, not manten.
  • Using mantener for 'keep doing': to continue an action, use seguir + gerund. Sigue trabajando, not Mantiene trabajando.
