How to use mantener in the present
In the present, mantener follows tener: mantengo, mantienes, mantiene, mantenemos, mantienen. Note the g in the yo form and the ie in four forms. Use it for keeping things in a certain state (mantiene la oficina ordenada), for maintaining relationships and systems, and for supporting people financially: mantiene a sus padres. Mantenerse adds the idea of 'staying': me mantengo en forma.
