How to use mantener in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: mantenía, mantenías, manteníamos, mantenían. It describes ongoing situations in the past: mantenía a su familia con dos trabajos, manteníamos contacto por carta. It is the natural tense for describing how things used to be kept or maintained before a change, such as paper records before a new system. There is no stem change in this tense, so it is as easy as any regular -er verb.

Examples

  • Mi papá mantenía a la familia con dos trabajos.

My dad supported the family by working two jobs.

  • Antes manteníamos todos los registros en papel.

We used to keep all the records on paper.

  • Aunque vivíamos lejos, manteníamos el contacto.

Even though we lived far apart, we kept in touch.
