How empezar conjugates

Empezar combines two changes. The stressed e becomes ie in the present (empiezo, empiezas, empieza, empiezan) and in the subjunctive (empiece). The z becomes c before e: empecé in the preterite and empiece, empecemos in the subjunctive. Nosotros has no stem change: empezamos, empecemos. The imperfect, future and conditional are regular: empezaba, empezaré, empezaría.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting "a" before the infinitive: "Empecé a trabajar," not "Empecé trabajar."
  • Writing "empezé" or "empieze": the correct forms are empecé and empiece, since z becomes c before e.
  • Applying the stem change to nosotros: "empezamos," not "empiezamos."
