How to use conseguir in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: conseguía, conseguías, conseguíamos, conseguían. It describes repeated success or failure in the past (antes conseguía todo más barato) and, in the negative, an ongoing struggle: no conseguía concentrarme. The preterite, by contrast, tells whether the effort finally worked out on a particular occasion. Because the stress falls on the ending, there is no stem change and no spelling change in any form of this tense. The nosotros form conseguíamos describes what a group used to be able to get.

Examples

  • Por más que lo intentaba, no conseguía abrir el archivo.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't open the file.

  • Antes conseguíamos vuelos baratos con facilidad.

We used to get cheap flights easily.

  • En el pueblo no se conseguían muchos productos importados.

You couldn't get many imported products in the town.
