How to use considerar in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: consideraba, considerabas, considerábamos, consideraban. It describes opinions held over time in the past (lo consideraban un genio) and things being considered when something else happened: considerábamos mudarnos cuando surgió la oferta. It is useful for contrasting past and present views, as in antes se consideraba un lujo. The nosotros form considerábamos carries a written accent, and the tense is common in reports that describe how a situation used to be evaluated.

Examples

  • Antes se consideraba un lujo tener celular.

Having a cell phone used to be considered a luxury.

  • Considerábamos mudarnos cuando me ofrecieron el ascenso.

We were thinking about moving when they offered me the promotion.

  • Mis compañeros me consideraban el más serio del grupo.

My classmates thought of me as the most serious one in the group.
