How to use ganar in the preterite

The preterite is regular: gané, ganaste, ganó, ganamos, ganaron. Use it for completed wins (ganamos el partido), prizes (ganó la lotería) and money earned in a closed period: el año pasado gané más. Ganamos is the same in the present and the preterite, so context matters. Remember the accents on gané and ganó, especially in written messages: ¡ganaste!
