How to use ocurrir in the preterite

The preterite is regular, and ocurrió and ocurrieron are the forms you need most. Use it to report a specific event (el accidente ocurrió a las seis) and, with pronouns, to say when an idea came to you: se me ocurrió anoche. In incident reports, police statements and the news, ocurrió is much more frequent than pasó. Remember that the verb agrees with what happened, not with the person.

Examples

  • ¿Cuándo ocurrió el incidente?

    When did the incident happen?

  • Se nos ocurrieron varias ideas para el evento.

We came up with several ideas for the event.

  • Lo que ocurrió ayer no se puede repetir.

What happened yesterday can't happen again.
