How to use pagar in the preterite

The preterite has a spelling change only in the yo form: pagué. The others are regular: pagaste, pagó, pagamos, pagaron. Use it to confirm completed payments, which is essential in emails with clients and suppliers: Ya pagué la factura, adjunto el comprobante. Pagamos is identical in the present and preterite, so context tells you which one it is.

Examples

  • Pagué la factura ayer; te adjunto el comprobante.

I paid the invoice yesterday; I'm attaching the receipt.

  • ¿Cuánto pagaste por el vuelo?
