How to use perder in the preterite

The preterite of perder is completely regular, with no stem change: perdí, perdiste, perdió, perdimos, perdieron. This is the tense for a specific loss or a missed event: perdí el vuelo, perdimos el partido. Learners often carry the ie over from the present by mistake, but forms like pierdí or pierdió do not exist. Perdí can also mean 'I wasted', as in perdí toda la mañana en el banco.
