How to use perder in the conditional

The conditional (perdería, perderías, perderíamos, perderían) is regular. Use it for hypothetical losses (perderíamos al cliente) and for friendly advice: yo no perdería el tiempo con eso means 'I wouldn't waste time on that'. It also reports earlier predictions: nadie pensaba que perdería. In the past, it can also express a guess: perdería las llaves en el taxi means 'he must have lost his keys in the taxi'. Combine it with si and the imperfect subjunctive for unreal conditions: si llegáramos tarde, perderíamos el vuelo.

Examples

  • Yo no perdería el tiempo discutiendo con él.

I wouldn't waste my time arguing with him.

  • Si subimos los precios, perderíamos a varios clientes.

If we raised prices, we'd lose several clients.

  • Nadie pensaba que la selección perdería ese partido.

Nobody thought the national team would lose that game.
