How to use trabajar in the preterite

The preterite is regular: trabajé, trabajaste, trabajó, trabajamos, trabajaron. Use it for work done in a closed period, even a long one, when you present it as finished: trabajé diez años en esa empresa. That contrasts with the imperfect, which describes the job as background (cuando trabajaba allí). Watch the written accents on trabajé and trabajó. Even a long period takes the preterite if it has clear limits: trabajó ahí de 2010 a 2020.

Examples

  • Trabajé tres años en un hotel antes de entrar a esta empresa.

I worked at a hotel for three years before joining this company.

  • ¿Cuántas horas trabajaste la semana pasada?

How many hours did you work last week?

  • El equipo trabajó todo el fin de semana para terminar la mudanza.

The team worked all weekend to finish the move.
