How to use tratar in the conditional

The conditional of tratar is regular: trataría, tratarías, trataría, trataríamos, tratarían. It is very useful for advice ("Yo trataría de hablar con ella") and hypotheticals: "Si fuera tú, trataría de negociar." It sounds softer than a direct suggestion, which is why it is common in feedback conversations. Like the future, it uses the full infinitive as its stem, so there are no irregular forms.

Examples

  • Yo trataría de hablar con ella en persona.

I'd try to talk to her in person.

  • Si tuviera más tiempo, trataría de aprender alemán.

If I had more time, I'd try to learn German.

  • ¿Cómo tratarías a un cliente tan difícil?

How would you deal with such a difficult client?
