How to use tratar in the imperfect
The imperfect of tratar is regular: trataba, tratabas, trataba, tratábamos, trataban. Use it for repeated efforts or ongoing situations: "Siempre trataba de ayudar." It also describes how someone used to treat others: "Mi jefe anterior nos trataba con mucho respeto." "Se trataba de..." means "it was about..." The only extra accent falls on tratábamos.
