Pedir conjugation Spanish verb
Pedir means to ask for something or ask someone to do something: pedir ayuda, pedir un aumento, te pido que vengas. It is also the verb for ordering food and products (¿qué vas a pedir?). Don't confuse it with preguntar, which means asking a question.

How pedir conjugates
Pedir is an e→i stem-changing -ir verb. The e becomes i in the present (pido, pides, pide, piden, but pedimos), in the third-person preterite (pidió, pidieron), in the whole present and imperfect subjunctive (pida, pidamos, pidiera) and in the gerund pidiendo. Servir, repetir and seguir follow the same model. The imperfect, future and conditional are regular.

Mistakes to avoid
- Using pedir for questions: pedir is asking for something; to ask a question, use preguntar. Le pregunté la hora, not Le pedí la hora.
- Adding por after pedir: the thing you ask for follows directly. Pedí un café, not Pedí por un café.
- Forgetting the stem change in the preterite: pidió and pidieron, not pedió or pedieron.
