How to use pedir in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: pedía, pedías, pedíamos, pedían. It describes repeated requests in the past (siempre pedía lo mismo) and background situations, such as what people kept asking for at the time: la gente pedía más información. Because the stress falls on the ending in every form, there is no stem change in this tense. Remember the accent on the í in every form.

Examples

  • Mi abuelo siempre pedía café sin azúcar.

My grandfather always ordered his coffee without sugar.

  • Los clientes pedían más opciones de pago.

Customers kept asking for more payment options.

  • Cuando era niño, pedía permiso para todo.

When I was a kid, I asked permission for everything.
