How to use ayudar in the imperfect
The imperfect is regular: ayudaba, ayudabas, ayudaba, ayudábamos, ayudaban. Use it for ongoing help or habits in the past, for example helping out in a family business as a teenager. It is also the tense for background when you were helping someone and something else happened: Le ayudaba a cargar el camión cuando se cayó.

Los sábados ayudaba a mi abuela en el mercado.
On Saturdays I used to help my grandmother at the market.
Te ayudaba con eso cuando me llamó el jefe.
I was helping you with that when the boss called me.
El clima no ayudaba nada.
The weather wasn't helping at all.
