How to use continuar in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular with no extra accents on the u: continuaba, continuabas, continuaba, continuábamos, continuaban. Use it for situations that went on in the past: La lluvia continuaba. With a gerund, it shows persistence: Continuaba insistiendo. It sets the background for something else that happened. Remember the accent on continuábamos, which every -ar verb has in the nosotros imperfect form.

Examples

  • La lluvia continuaba cuando salimos de la oficina.

The rain was still going when we left the office.

  • El cliente continuaba insistiendo en el descuento.

The client kept insisting on the discount.

  • A pesar de los cambios, el equipo continuaba igual de motivado.
