How to use elegir in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular, with no changes: elegía, elegías, elegía, elegíamos, elegían. Use it for repeated choices in the past (Siempre elegía lo mismo) and for background in a story: Mientras elegía, se acabaron las entradas. It describes a habit or a process rather than a final decision. Remember there is no e→i change and no j in any imperfect form.

Examples

  • Mientras elegía, se agotaron las entradas.

While I was choosing, the tickets sold out.

  • En el comedor siempre elegía el menú del día.

In the cafeteria I always chose the daily special.

  • Antes los clientes elegían el color en la tienda.

Customers used to choose the color in the store.
