How to use pensar in the present

The present of pensar changes e to ie in all forms except nosotros: pienso, piensas, piensa, pensamos, piensan. Use it for opinions ("Pienso que sí"), for thinking about something ("Pienso mucho en eso") and for plans with an infinitive: "¿Piensas ir a la conferencia?" Affirmative "pienso que" takes the indicative, while "no pienso que" usually takes the subjunctive. The plan meaning is very common and often surprises English speakers.

Examples

  • ¿Piensas ir a la conferencia en Monterrey?

Are you planning to go to the conference in Monterrey?

  • No pienso trabajar este domingo.

I'm not planning to work this Sunday.

  • Pensamos lo mismo sobre el nuevo horario.

We think the same about the new schedule.
